Have Questions?

Frequently Asked
Questions

What is a Sports Massage?

Sports Massage is a form of hands-on therapy that targets specific muscles and soft tissues to reduce pain and muscle tension, improve range of motion and flexibility, and aid injury recovery & rehabilitation. It usually entails the client sitting or lying on a massage couch while a massage therapist massages the soft tissues of the client using a range of techniques.

Is Sports Massage just for sporty people?

No! Sports Massage really is for everyone. It may have started out as a way to improve athletic performance but Sports Massage is not specific to sports. We all have muscles and many of us suffer from aches and pains, niggles that won’t go away and a reduced range of motion (think stiff neck or restricted shoulder or hip movements) – this is where Sports Massage can help.

What to expect from a sports massage?

Each session lasts an hour. The therapist will ask you for your medical history before carrying out an assessment. This will entail some functional tests to check the range of movement before starting the massage. Sports Massage techniques include soft tissue work, myofascial release, trigger point work, muscle energy techniques and myofascial cupping.

What is the difference between a sports massage and a holistic massage?

A Sports Massage is ideal for aches and pains, chronic issues and injuries, such as back pain, that require targeted massage to reduce pain and tension to that area and its supporting muscle groups. A Holistic Massage is a whole-body massage that helps relax and restore vitality to the body, mind and soul.

Is a Sports Massage a full body massage?

During the initial assessment of a Sports Massage, the therapist will carry out a series of orthopaedic and functional tests, looking at the whole body and its range of movement. Typically, most clients who come for a sports massage have an existing problem that we focus on during the massage.

How do you know if you need a sports massage?

We should live a pain-free life and not settle for anything less than feeling our best. If you are suffering from a niggle that won’t go away, muscle tension that is ruining your quality of life or getting fed up with a chronic injury that is taking forever to heal, a sports massage could be for you.
